The Sweet Greek

  • May 20, 2025

In charming downtown Milton, Florida, a culinary journey steeped in family tradition and ambitious spirit is unfolding with The Sweet Greek. Melissa Simpson owns this vibrant business that’s a celebration of heritage, hospitality, and the art of Greek cuisine.

Melissa’s success story is bolstered by her partnerships with local economic programs, particularly with the Florida Small Business Development Center at the University of West Florida (FSBDC at UWF) and Santa Rosa County Economic Development. She’s said how these collaborations have been valuable in guiding her business growth, providing insights into marketing, financial analysis, and operations in a convenient and no-cost way.

“I’ve found there are so many resources out there,” Melissa shares, reflecting on her small business path. “Anytime I had a question, they were able to answer it; so it was great and all the support, even from the other business owners, it just always fed back into the program.”

It’s Sweet to Be Greek

The Sweet Greek is also an example of generations of culinary expertise, blending 100-year-old family recipes from Greece with little, modern twists. Additionally, the business not only spans family lines but also incorporates a rich legacy through Viores Fine Candies and Chocolates, a century-old chocolate company brought over from Greece by their cousins in Pennsylvania.

On top of being a café- and retail-focused local business, The Sweet Greek stands for an immersive experience that transports patrons to the “Old Country.” Visitors savor decadent treats, handcrafted ice creams, as well as a variety of coffee and espresso drinks. The team prepares all of them with meticulous attention.

The Sweet Greek shares on their website: “And, of course, what kind of Greeks would we be if we did not try to teach you a little Greek and some of our traditions, history, and mythology all at the same time.”

Creating an Entrepreneurial Environment

A commitment to authentic ingredients and techniques, using local and regional vendors, as well as maintaining a keen focus on customer and employee feedback, characterizes Melissa’s business approach. Finding hidden operational efficiencies, plus leaning on business data down to the penny, are more key aspects. The founder adds how it’s important to have confidence in your small business lender too.

“What’s interesting,” she concludes, “is I’ve talked to different business owners in every kind of category, restaurant, retail, you name it — and one of the things I found that happened over and over again was everyone kept bringing up the programs (SBDC has) …  So thank you, SBDC and Santa Rosa County Economic Development. All the items you have available to us has been really helpful.”
